On Tuesday 11 December, Australia’s Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, the Hon Darren Chester MP, visited the Australian Embassy Bangkok to unveil the plinth dedicated to the Thai-Burma Railway, as well as those who suffered and lost their lives there during the Second World War.
On Wednesday 12 December, he paid a courtesy call on General Namphol of the Royal Thai Armed Forces to strengthen the defence ties between Thailand and Australia.
The Minister also visited the Hellfire Pass and Kanchanaburi War Cemetery to lay a wreath and pay respect to the soldiers who dedicated their lives for their nations during the Second World War and re-opened the refurbished Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre and Walking Trail in Kanchanaburi province.
The Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre, which was originally built and funded by the Australian Government in collaboration with the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, had undergone refurbishment. The refurbishment work was managed by Australia’s Office of Australian War Graves, which, on behalf of the Australian Government, maintains official Australian military memorials in overseas locations, including Thailand. These memorials recognise and educate Australians and other visitors to these locations about Australia’s military history and heritage.
