Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, visited Thailand on Thursday 10 January. Her visit comes at an important time for Thailand as it takes up its position as ASEAN Chair for 2019, Southeast Asia’s premier representative grouping.
The Foreign Minister Payne met with her counterpart Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai having constructive discussions on a range of bilateral and regional issues, including the ongoing detention of Mr Hakeem Alaraibi to advocate for his safe return to Australia. Continuing Australia’s partnership with Thailand to counter transnational crime and enhance border security ensures a safe and prosperous Mekong region, she had a productive meeting with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice Prajin Juntong.
Additionally, The Foreign Minister Payne also signed a new Thailand-Australia Memorandum of Understanding on Cyber and Digital Cooperation with Thai Minister for Digital Economy and Society, Dr Pichet Durongkaveroj. This MOU will support our countries to manage cyber threats and harness opportunities for digital trade.
Thailand is an important trade and investment partner for Australia. It is the second largest economy in South East Asia, and our 9th largest two-way trading partner.
The visit has served as an opportunity to reiterate our support for Thailand’s return to democracy, following elections that are expected to take place this year.
