By Bumrungrad International Hospital
For more than 38 years in operation, Bumrungrad International Hospital has been part of Thai society from the beginning when it was founded with the commitment to create and promote proper cultures and values with the aim to establish safety and quality standards and transparency. All this is undertaken with patients at the heart of everything we do.
Additionally, we have long been supporting social activities continuously in the areas we are good at for sustainable results. Social responsibility is the hospital’s policy, process, and volunteering spirit all integrated into patterns to incorporate both internal and external processes. We take part in various community projects particularly those involving public health promotion and providing care and treatment for the underprivileged in the hope to achieve sustainable results, thereby cultivating fairness in business operations among the hospital, stakeholders, as well as society and environment.
Our social responsibility covers both the internal society within the organization and the one outside. For the former, our first and foremost responsibility is towards our patients. Bumrungrad International Hospital has a management policy and a principal value committing itself to the patient rights, quality and safety, and measurable results. This is to create the confidence that all patients and visitors to the hospital are given the best and proper treatment according to both national and international hospital standards. One example is the JCI (Joint Commission International) standard, a highly-regarded accreditation Bumrungrad was the first hospital in Asia to receive in 2002 and an honor it has enjoyed continuously to the present day.
Another example is that in 2017, Bumrungrad became the first hospital in Asia to be DNV GL MIR Certified. The DNV GL’s Managing Infection Risk Standard provides a framework to help organizations improve the management of infection risk — which reduces the potential for harm to patients, visitors, and staff. The hospital also has a policy to properly care for the well-being of its personnel of over 4,800 to ensure they have a quality life and can, in turn, perform their duties efficiently care for patients.
As far as the responsibility to the external society, Bumrungrad relies on the organization’s and its personnel’s major capabilities to promote good public health as well as the well-being of people in various communities and the underprivileged. An ongoing major project is the “Rak Jai Thai” or “Healing Hearts” program where underprivileged children with congenital heart disease receive heart surgeries at no cost. This help has also been extended to children from neighboring countries, Myanmar and Vietnam, and the latest addition to the program in 2018, Cambodia. From 2003-2018, a total of 778 children were operated on under this program.
Another is the “ARSA Bumrungrad” Mobile Clinic that has been visiting various provinces of Thailand to provide free medical and dental services to those in remote rural areas. Since 1993, over 100,000 villagers have benefited from the services rendered by the Mobile Clinic, For the Greater Bangkok area in particular, the Mobile Clinic has been in operation since 2001, providing medical care free of charge for the underprivileged in over 36 communities five days a week, with an average of 18,000 service users per year.
For the sixth consecutive year, in 2018 Bumrungrad has received the AMCHAM CSR Excellence Award – Gold Level by the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand in recognition of Bumrungrad’s continuous commitment in helping society.
